This is a typical stuffing box with a leak off line. The stuffing box here has a cut away to allow students to see what it looks like on the inside of the stuffing box. With this lab you can simulate repacking a valve with the lantern ring installed with packing above and below. You can drop the lantern ring to the bottom and install a spacer to simulate abandoning the leak off line or you can remove the lantern ring entirely and install a spacer to also show abandoning the leak off line.
